With three beautiful kids, a $10m house and her husband at home more often, why does Bec seem so unhappy with Lleyton?
The couple who once likened themselves to the “Posh and Becks” of Australia appear to be following in the footsteps of their more famous counterparts – and bickering more and more as they try to save their marriage.
Friends say Bec Hewitt has had enough of being taken for granted by “ungrateful” husband Lleyton as their once celebrated love affair comes under increasing pressure and they fight to revive the spark that has gone out after almost 13 years of marriage.
“The biggest danger for Bec and Lleyton now is boredom,” says one friend, who says both are struggling with the humdrum of normality after the jetset life they led when he was playing tennis.
“They are a couple stuck in stale domesticity in suburbia, and as they bicker and run after the kids, life could not seem more different to Bec’s days of hobnobbing with celebrities on the tennis circuit.”
The tension between the pair was palpable, as they fought openly while out together in Melbourne recently.
Lleyton, like millions of Aussies, fell in love with Bec when she was a household name, mobbed at shopping centres and splashed on magazine covers. When she quit the soap in 2005 just one week after announcing she was pregnant with their first child, Mia, following a whirlwind romance, Bec said: “I’ll always remember my days on Home And Away as the best of my life.”
Those words must be haunting Bec now as she wonders what’s happened to that confident young woman while struggling to build a life in Melbourne amid increasing tension with Lleyton, 37.
“Bec wants Lleyton to see her as the actress with status she was when their paths first crossed but, of course, Lleyton sees her as a wife and a mum – because she hasn’t worked as an actress in years.”
Their marriage has always been a rollercoaster with “loving and open” Bec, 34, struggling with Lleyton’s tendency to close himself off, on top of his insistence on spending time with his mates to balance his demanding home life.
“It’s not that Lleyton doesn’t love being a husband and a father, it’s just he doesn’t want to surrender all the parts of his life that define him,” our source says.
“He’d like to be able to play a few games of tennis without Bec calling around to try to find him. In her quest to feel loved, she demands all Lleyton’s time and attention and he often feels trapped.”
Friends say the tension has hit new heights recently as he comes under pressure with mooted changes to the Davis Cup that could see him in Melbourne more.
In fact, they fear the couple are struggling to find any common ground other than their kids, Mia, 12, Cruz, nine, and Ava seven.
“They fight over the smallest things,” says the friend.
“It could be anything from Lleyton rushing out without saying goodbye properly, leaving his clothes on the floor, or not saying thank you when Bec cleans up after him – which she’s always done – to him forgetting to pick up bread, or not paying attention when Bec tells him about her day.”
