My memory drawer

- Judith Caine, Donvale, Vic

I found you in my bottom drawer, with pens and paper, and notes with scrawls Postcards and letters, loose photos galore, all mixed up and with so much more There are feathers and ribbons jammed into tins, Old tickets and programs from memories dim, Cards full of sadness, and others that cheer, from life events, year after year Love poems and secrets tucked tight away, Children’s first scribbles, all precious today Bookmarks collected from near and afar, a child’s first tooth in a Vegemite jar Maps, diaries and old travel tales, brochures and trinkets and old-fashioned mail Embroidered hankies with bright-coloured thread, Holding Grandfather’s dog tag, war-dented and bent Faded rose petals from coffin top wreaths, now in small boxes to have and to keep I found my life in my bottom drawer, kaleidoscope memories, and there’s room for more
