Despite a seven-year age gap, Adelaide youngsters Joanne Ratcliffe, 11, and her little buddy Kirste Gordon, four, loved to cheer on their beloved local Aussie rules footy team together.

On August 25, 1973, both families were at the Adelaide Oval – Joanne was there with her parents, while Kirste had come along with her grandmothe­r.

When Kirste needed to go to the toilet, Joanne dutifully walked her to the toilet block
