Plan a weekend in SHOAL BAY!
Woman’s Day’s ELISE WILSON discovers Port Stephens’ hidden gem
S un, sea, sand dunes – and camels? It wasn’t quite what I was expecting three hours north of Sydney, but that’s exactly what Shoal Bay delivered.
FOR THE THRILLSEEKERS
I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so I was pretty stoked to learn Port Stephens has sand dunes that could rival those in Dubai! The team at Sand Dune Adventures gave us a crash course on quad biking before we began our 90-minute tour of the amazing coastal desert. This activity is great for all levels, and you can go a speed you feel comfortable with.
FOR THE FAMILY ADVENTURERS
The last time I sat on a camel, I was nine years old and I fell off. Although I’m particularly wary of camel rides now, the lovely family operating Oakfield Ranch Camel Rides at Birubi Beach made me feel at ease by acquainting me with their friendliest camel Trooper. The relaxing ride took just under 30 minutes – a great experience the whole family will enjoy!
FOR THE OUTDOOR LOVERS
Whether you’re a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) enthusiast or enjoy coastal walks, you won’t be disappointed by the range of outdoor activities available. I rose early on my second day in Shoal Bay to hike Mt Tomaree for sunrise, then spent the rest of my morning paddleboarding in the crystal clear, calm water.
