Underwater engagement
This Perth tradie surprised his sweetheart by taking the plunge
We often say we’d go to great depths for our sweethearts – but would you be willing to plunge 3.5 metres beneath the waves?!
One adventurous couple from Perth proved their love is deeper than the ocean by getting engaged underwater in Queensland’s picturesque Great Barrier Reef.
Jasmine Robertson, 24, had no idea her partner of six years Lawrence Tufnell, 29, was planning to pop the big question during a getaway to Cairns.
The loved-up pair went diving on their first date, so tradesman Lawrence decided to incorporate the special moment into his big proposal by organising a dive.
Two days into their Queensland holiday, Jasmine went for a dive – but had no idea what would be waiting for her on the ocean floor.
Surrounded by colourful coral and exotic fish, Jasmine got the shock of her life when Lawrence suddenly dropped to one knee and pulled out an engagement ring, along with a sign asking for her hand in marriage.
“I had no idea he was going to propose,” the personal trainer tells Woman’s Day, who says she was busy admiring the sea life when their diving instructor gestured for her to turn around.
“Lawrence was on one knee. I had no idea what he was doing. But then I saw the ring and he pulled out this sign asking me to marry him,” laughs Jasmine. “I started screaming inside my diving helmet.
“He came over to me and put a bracelet on my arm with the engagement ring safely attached to it with a lanyard. I think he was worried about dropping the ring in the sand or a fish coming along and eating it!”
Adds Jasmine: “I’d love to have the wedding near the Great Barrier Reef, but definitely on dry land this time!”
