START WITH A VISION

If you have an idea of what you want the room to look like, you can create eclectic design and avoid the garage sale look.

KNOW YOUR SPACE

Keep a list of measurements from the room you’re decorating. If you uncover a one-of-a-kind item, you don’t want to have to run home and measure the space while someone else could be buying a piece you love.

GET CREATIVE

A piece of furniture might have had a different use in the past but could be given a new lease of life in your home. A sideboard might make a great entertainment unit and a small dining table could be your new desk.

FIX UP A FIXER-UPPER

In times gone by, pieces were handcrafted and built to last, often made from lovely timber that is no longer available today. If you find a well-worn but iconic item, invest in restoring it. It will be with you for a long time.

ASK THE EXPERTS

Vintage and antique dealers have a wealth of knowledge about their wares. Tell them what you’re looking for. If they don’t have your dream item on display, they may well have it tucked away in their warehouse.

MIX & MATCH

Create your individual, eclectic look by mixing and matching pieces from different eras and styles. An 18th century cabinet underneath a modern artwork can be a cool and unusual pairing.
