Have you ever wondered, “Am I feeding my pet the best possible food?” Are you overwhelmed by all the choices? The importance of diet can’t be overstated but how do you know you’re feeding them the right thing? Signs your pet isn’t eating right include ear infections, skin allergies, itching, smelly gas, loose stools and a dull coat. Navigating the hype of pet food is daunting, but with these five key tips you’ll be an expert in no time and your pet will thank you!

1 LOOK FOR ANIMAL PROTEINS

It’s important that the first two or three ingredients come from quality animal sources. Stay away from generic meat ingredients such as “byproducts”.

2 BEWARE PROTEIN SUBSTITUTES

Potatoes, peas and chickpeas all drive protein levels up, which looks good. However, once consumed bby your pet they convert to sugar, which can contribute to weight gain and diabetes.

3 CHOOSE GRAINFREE FOODS

Dogs have a limited capacity to digest grains. Corn and wheat are common triggers for food sensitivities.

4 AVOID CHEAP FILLERS

Wheat, soy, corn, cereal byproducts and beet pulp are just some of the cheaper ingredients used to bulk up commercial pet food.

5 LOOK FOR NUTRIENTS

For optimal health, look for probiotics, digestive enzymes, omega-3 fats and turmeric.
