Keep them fit!

OWNER AND ANIMAL EXERCISES

“Obviously you can’t take your dog to the gym, however it’s really simple to find a local dog park,” says Sam. “It doesn’t have to be complicated either, and the pace can be at a run to a walk, depending on the needs of your pet. Start with short walks and work your way up. Even if it’s just for 20 minutes, put the leash on and go for a walk, play a game of fetch in the backyard or, in the warmer months, go for a swim. Each bit of exercise adds up. For cats, I suggest getting a scratching post that will encourage movement and add fun to their day.”

EXPLORE ALTERNATE OPTIONS

“There are so many ways to keep our pets fit outside of walking now,” Sam reveals. “A new method of exercise for dogs is hydrotherapy [water exercise therapy], which helps pets who have bad joints or may be suffering from injuries. There are some much cheaper options that you can get involved with, too! Creating obstacle courses with wooden inclines and items to weave in and out of can also make your outing a little more interesting. You can always visit your local Petbarn or Greencross Vet, who can recommend some alternative therapies that will suit your pet.”

NO EATING AT THE TABLE

“While it’s very tempting to give in to those puppy-dog eyes that are asking for table scraps, you should avoid this,” Sam insists. “It’s important to remember our pets have very different digestive systems to us and leftovers such as ham offcuts, chicken skin and cooked bones can result in pancreatitis and obstruction. Garlic and onion can also do a real number on a dog’s digestive system if they’re given too much.”
