Supersize baby

‘HOLY MOLY! My newborn is bigger than a six-month-old!’ Sydney mum Nikki gave birth to Blacktown Hospital’s biggest ever baby – without pain relief!

Most newborns weigh in at around 3.5kg – but Sydney mum Nikki Bell gave birth to a strapping baby boy who was almost double that! Not-so-little Parker James Bell arrived after a drug-free two-and-a-half hour labour and weighing in at a hefty 5.755kg. That’s 12lb, six ounces on the old scale!

“When my doctor placed Parker on my chest I thought, ‘Wow, he’s heavy,’” says proud mum, exercise physiologist Nikki, 28. “At my 34-week growth scan he was already weighing 3.5kg so I knew he’d be big – but not as big as a six-month-old!”

Parker arrived at Blacktown Hospital on November 1, four days before his due date. He didn’t fit into any of his newborn nappies or size 0 clothes, so Nikki’s police officer husband Michael, 30, quickly swapped them over for much larger sizes.

“He’s feeding every two hours so he’s getting even bigger!” laughs Nikki, who adds that big babies and height run on her side of the family – her dad and brother are both 192cm tall.

A “tired and a bit sore” Nikki is now recovering at home. “I’m doing a lot of pelvic floor exercises,” she laughs, adding that her 20-month-old daughter Maddison – who weighed 4.84kg at birth – loves being a big sister.

But Nikki says it’s way too soon n to think about having another, possibly even bigger, baby. “We’ve already got one who’s almost the size of two babies, so I think we’ll stop for now!”
