BUYING YOUR TEEN A CAR

Product planning manager for MG Motor Australia, PAVEL MECK, shares his top tips

- Pavel Meck

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

“Regardless of whether you’re buying a car brand new, secondhand, from a dealership or online, it’s always a good idea to get behind the wheel before committing to a purchase,” says Pavel. “Particularly for first time drivers, being comfortable behind the wheel is all-important. From finding the perfect ride height, seating position, or simply learning if you want to be king of the road in an SUV, or a master of the parallel park in a hatchback, a test drive will give you that knowledge.”

KNOWING WHEN IT’S THE ONE

“Drive the car on different roads to see how it manoeuvres on bumpier roads, bends and highways,” says Pavel. “Visibility from the driver’s seat is important, so change lanes while driving to see if there are any blind spots. After the test drive, if you are still unsure about the car, consider taking it for a second drive to help you make your decision.”

CHECK OUT THE WARRANTY

“Warranty and roadside assist give you peace of mind when you’re behind the wheel, let alone your teen. It’s always a good idea to check out what cover the manufacturer offers,” says Pavel. “For example, each new MG comes with a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, and seven-year roadside assist. Most manufacturers’ offers vary, so do check before you invest.”

GET GOOD SERVICE

“Check the vehicle’s manual to learn more about a car’s servicing and safety information,” says Pavel.
