Canberra’s Civic Square becomes the centre of the city on New Year’s Eve, with plenty of entertainm­ent, food trucks and a lively atmosphere.

NSW

Sydney’s fireworks are worldrenow­ned and Bradfield Park in Milsons Point has flawless views across Sydney Harbour. Make sure you get there early.

Head to the Darwin Waterfront with your lawn chairs, picnic basket and esky for a laid-back start to 2019, right on the water. There’s plenty of entertainm­ent and food to keep you going until the stroke of midnight.

QLD

South Bank overlookin­g the Brisbane River is a hotspot on New Year’s Eve. Head to Clem Jones Promenade via the Cultural Forecourt for food stalls and a gorgeous view.

SA

Make your way to Elder Park to watch fireworks launch from the River Torrens and Pinky Flat. The whole park will be drenched in lights, including the historic rotunda.

TAS

The yacht-spotted harbour side of Sullivans Cove is beautiful from every angle, but head to Princes Park in Hobart for a bit more space (and a playground for the kids).

VIC

You can watch Melbourne’s fireworks from any location where the city’s skyline is visible. For an expansive view away from the main crowds, try Green Point in Brighton.

WA

Visit Kings Park to see the fireworks over Perth’s Swan River. This park is huge, so you’ll be able to find a spot, even on one of the busiest days of the year.

Or watch from home! If you can’t make it to a fireworks display, you can watch the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks live from 8.35pm on ABC or ABC iview.
