Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco didn’t have the most blissful start to married life – she is said to have tried to flee before their wedding – and now the princess is raising eyebrows again after she skipped out on the royal family’s glitzy Rose Ball.

Her husband of eight years Prince Albert, 61, who hosted the event, garnered attention when he stepped onto the red

carpet on the arm of his sister, Princess Caroline of Hanover.

Charlene’s non-attendance comes despite a loved-up display of affection last month, when she clung to Albert’s arm while the Chinese president visited.

South African-born Charlene, 41, hit headlines in 2011 when it was reported she tried to skip the country three times amid rumours Albert had fathered a love child, before she sobbed her way through the ceremony.

But all seemed forgiven between the husband and wife, who welcomed twins Gabriella and Jacques in 2014. “It seemed they’d finally settled happily into family life. Charlene was thrilled to be a mum and Albert had produced a rightful heir to the throne,” says our source.

Making her absence seem all the more bizarre last week, Charlene and Albert personally looked after the 1000-strong guest list – and this year the soiree honoured the life of her good friend Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in February.

“For Charlene to miss out on the Rose Ball is very strange. It’s the Monaco royals’ night of nights, hosted by her husband. It must be something very important for her not to attend,” says a source. “There will always be gossip the marriage is in trouble, but some are even wondering if maybe she’s pregnant again. She seemed to be covering up at recent state events.”
