Woman’s Day (Australia)

I WAS READY TO TAKE ON JACK BLACK’S ROLE!

-

Actor Brent Hill is well aware that he’s got big shoes to fill when he steps out on Aussie stages as much-loved character Dewey Finn, who was originally brought to life in 2003 by Jack Black in the comedy smash hit School Of Rock. But Brent tells Woman’s Day he’s always been up for a challenge...

Were you nervous to take on the role of Dewey?

Not really! I made sure I was prepared going into it. It was clear it was going to be damn hard work – Dewey leads the company, barely leaves the stage and really drives the story. The conversation was had right from the beginning: obviously Jack’s portrayal in the film is iconic, but [it’s] about portraying the spirit of

Dewey, rather than it being performance mimicry.

What interested you about the role?

I don’t like musical theatre or at least the way it’s broadly done. But I love comedy, so I’ve enjoyed the challenge of taking something that could be totally over the top and ridiculous. Also, working with the kids, playing in a band... living out my rock star dreams!

How does the Aussie production differ to the international version?

We make a few references to local knowledge – we don’t forget the crowd’s sensibility. The story is aesthetically American, but it easily translates to modern Australia – if it’s one thing Aussies know, it’s rock music!

They say you should never work with animals and children but you’re working with more than 30 kids at a time. How have you coped?

Quiet alone time! No, I haven’t found that saying to be true at all. I’ve been very impressed with their professionalism – and their Rubik’s Cube solving!
