FUR BALL ON TOUR!

Fuss-free ways to keep your pets safe these holidays

-

Whether the end-of-year break sees you travelling with your four-legged friends in tow or keeping your kitties at the casa while you escape, here’s what you need to consider so your little mates stay happy and healthy.

IDENTIFICATION

Before you even think about holidaying with your pet, sort out their ID. “Make sure your animals are microchipped and registered with your local council,” advises celeb vet Dr Harry Cooper (inset). A current ID tag that includes your mobile number means you’ll have a better chance of being reunited if separated from your furry friend.

CAR SAFETY

Ensure your pet is safely secured with a pet seatbelt (we love Rufus & Coco seatbelt, $15, Woolworths) and be aware travel sickness can affect them, too.

“If your pet isn’t a regular passenger, do a test drive somewhere local first. You can get travel sickness medication if your pet is affected,” says pet advocate and Rufus & Coco founder Anneke van den Broek. “Make sure they’re comfortable by bringing bedding or blankets, and take regular toilet, exercise and hydration stops.”

Most importantly, never leave your pet locked in a hot car, as you run the risk of fatal heatstroke.

FLIGHT PREP

Unlike parts of Europe and the US, dogs are not allowed to fly in the cabin in Australia, except for assistance dogs. If you’re planning to fly with your r pet, be aware it can be stressful. ful. “Ideally, your pet will have ave been crate-trained to prepare them for air travel, as they will be in a crate for the duration,” ” says Anneke. “Make sure they have their creature comforts with them – toys and blankets – and give them lots of water before the flight.”

ULTIMATE CARE

As exciting as new surroundings can be, they ey also provide increased risks. Check your pet insurance for what you’re covered for. If you’re still looking for a provider, now is the time! With a range of cover options for cats and dogs, Woolworths Pet Insurance (insurance.woolworths.com.au/ pet-insurance) could help protect you and your mate in the case of injury. The service also offers an exclusive Vetassist service on all new policies, which includes 12 months free* online access to vet advice from the comfort of your own home.

STAYING HOME

Leaving the fur babies at home? Dogs in particular require entertainment, so invest in a food dispenser like a Kong. And if your pet is going to a cattery or kennel, “make sure they’re up-to-date with all their vaccinations and you have evidence of this,” says Anneke. “Some cats are also fussy about using a different litter and will hold in their wee until they get an infection. To help prevent this, take your usual litter with you.”
