‘EVERY PLACE HAS A HISTORY’

The veteran host’s show is a must-watch for avid travellers

- ERNIE DINGO

There’s a good chance he knows this country better than any Australian, but even Ernie Dingo hasn’t lost his sense of wanderlust. And in a new season of Going Places With Ernie Dingo, the seasoned traveller, 64, is once again delving into the intriguing stories of some of the country’s most special spots...

There has never been a better time for us to connect – and to see – our own country. Why is it important for us to learn about the history of the locations on

Going Places?

Every place has a history... it’s important to discover it from both a non-indigenous and an Indigenous perspective.

What was your standout favourite place you visited and why?

There are so many. I love getting to watch places grow as you revisit them.

Was there a particular place’s history that shocked you or took you by surprise?

The Tiwi Islands’ culture, art and people. The fact that I have met a lot of the families and people on the mainland and then to see them at home on Tiwi learning their roots and practising their culture is a wonderful experience. An example is the footballer Austin Wonaeamirri, who I originally met in Melbourne and then again on Tiwi, reconnecting in his homeland.

How do you compare working on this show to your time on

The Great Outdoors?

It’s not a comparison – the two are very different shows.

The Great Outdoors format allowed for three to fiveminute stories. Each episode of Going Places with Ernie Dingo is made up of 17-minute stories, which allow you to get to know the people and the places they live and why they chose to make them their home.

‘I love getting to watch places grow as you revisit them’

Where is your go-to holiday spot in Oz that you love to visit with your family?

Anywhere on the west coast, north of Perth.

Does any place in particular hold special memories for you from your childhood?

The Murchison River. There are two types of people in Australia – those that come from Murchison and those that wish they did.

GOING PLACES WITH ERNIE DINGO premieres Saturday, 7.30pm, SBS
