What the heck is FRILUFTSLIV?

The word is sweeping the interior world – so let’s dissect it!

Friluftsliv is a Nordic concept that roughly translates to “open air living”, which is all about feeling connected to nature. As an interiors trend, it is all about creating that tranquil sensation inside, says Emily Treganowan, Linen House design studio manager.

FRILUFTSLIV PHILOSOPHY

“Bringing the outdoors in and integrating nature into your space has been trending for some time now,” Emily explains. “But it’s not just about housing a pot plant on a shelf any more, but about how can you integrate nature into your indoor setting so that you receive all of the benefits of the partnership.”

Like the hygge interiors trend, it is all about making your home feel peaceful and natural. She adds that natural fibres like cotton and linen are a great base for this look, and botanical prints, organic dip-dye pieces and greenery will create a connection between your interiors and the outdoors.

COLOUR SCHEME

“Start with a palette inspired by outdoor settings where you feel most at peace and you feel most called to,” Emily suggests. “For example, if you love the forest, olive, pine, warm, woody tones and neutral shades are perfect. If the water calls you, surround yourself with calming blue and neutral hues that foster that connection.”

DECOR & FURNISHINGS

Emily recommends adding tactility with natural fibres as a base, layered with faux fur, felt, chunky knits and soft chenille textures to “emulate textures derived from nature and help to encourage that feeling of wellness that friluftsliv embodies”.

She adds that jute rugs on hardwood floors will add surface texture to your flooring, while boucle and sheer textiles in your soft furnishings will add warmth.

“String adorned lampshades, marble finishes, natural cork and woodgrain surfaces are also a great touch,” Emily notes. “You can really elevate your setting by introducing plants or dried floral arrangements.”
