Explorer Dr Hugh Mungo-bosch once embarked on three very ambitious, but ultimately unsuccessful, expeditions to different continents. From the clues, can you tell the year and destination of each expedition, what misfortune befell him and how many months into the trip it occurred?

CLUES

1. On his last trip Dr Mungo-bosch became very sick with a nasty case of amoebic dysentery.

2. Dr Mungo-bosch cut short his trip to South America after seven months.

3. During the doctor’s 1865 trip up the Mekong river he was bitten by a many-banded krait.

4. The first expedition of the decade was curtailed after eight months.

Each time you rule out a match, put a cross where the vertical and horizontal squares meet in the grid. When you find a match, put a tick in the grid. Also put a cross in the other two squares horizontally and vertically in the same line, as no other combinations can be true. By doing so, you’ll gradually be able to solve the puzzle.
