DECODING KITTY LITTER
With so many varieties stocking supermarket shelves, it’s hard to know which one is best for your cat. Here we break down the most common varieties so you can find your feline’s favourite.
Clay
Clay kitty litter is available in both clumping, meaning it absorbs moisture quickly, or nonclumping, meaning it absorbs moisture slowly but has added ingredients to eliminate smell. Clumping clay litter can be buried in the garden and is the most economical as you seldom need to replace the whole tray. Non-clumping clay litter can stop your cats tracking litter through the house.
Crystals
Crystal cat litter is made up of solid silicate granules, which are highly porous and therefore highly effective at absorbing moisture. Crystal litter is non-clumping, lightweight, non-toxic and particularly hygienic as mould and bacteria are least likely to grow in it. Some cats find the crystals uncomfortable under their paws and can be less likely to take to this kind of litter.
Natural
This type of litter can be made of corn, wheat or pine. Natural kitty litters are biodegradable and have several potential benefits, including less dust, good natural odour control and sustainability.
Paper
Paper litter is made from recycled waste paper that has been compressed into pellets or granules. It’s chemical-free, meaning it’s safe for kittens and cats post-surgery, incredibly absorbent and can be composted.
