How cooking can be the saucy secret to a strong relationship

-

We’ve all heard that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, and new findings suggest this is entirely true. Nutrition professional Joel Feren reveals that research from Hellofresh and Bumble found that a home-cooked meal from a partner was considered more romantic than flowers.

“This is because cooking a meal for someone makes them feel special and shows you care,” he explains. “You have to really think about what that person would enjoy eating, get the ingredients together and learn how to make it.

“Speaking from experience, your partner will probably be more touched by a homecooked meal than a gift.”

DEEPER CONNECTIONS

Joel says that using food to connect with your significant other is a great way to show a taste of who you are and what you’re passionate about, something he knows from experience. “I know this firsthand as my wife and I regularly cook together,” he explains. “It’s an excellent way for us to bond and share stories from our day and talk about our love for food – the greatest love of all.”

Food can also evoke memories and feelings, and spark conversations and joy with a partner.

“A simple pasta can transport you to Italy, or the aroma of spices to far-off India,” says Joel.

“Choose food that represents who you are and share this with your partner as a way to build intimacy.”

DATE NIGHT

Many of us may have cooked for a special someone at some point, but Joel explains that if you really want fireworks, try cooking together. “Not only will you build your teamwork, but you’ll be encouraged to have fun and be romantic” he says.

For anyone wanting to create a perfect and romantic date night, Joel recommends paying special attention to those finishing touches.

“For example, candles can help create a romantic low-light atmosphere and a special music playlist can go a long way when it comes to setting a mood,” he suggests.

ON THE MENU

If you don’t consider yourself a particularly skilled cook, fear not. Joel explains that you

don’t need to be a Michelin- starred chef to cook up something delicious for your partner. He suggests trying a pre-prepared meal kit, with adventurous cuisines and exotic flavours that you and your special someone can explore together.

So what does Joel love to cook at home for his wife? He’s a fan of a fusion-inspired dish, believing it’s the key to sparking great conversations.

“My current favourite is the Speedy Japanese Tofu Tacos from Hellofresh,” he says.
