Simple & tasty meat swaps
Try swapping out animal products for these three flavoursome and nutritious plant-based substitutes
JACKFRUIT
This large, green and spiky fruit has a stringy, meat-like consistency when cooked, making it the perfect alternative to shredded chicken and pulled pork. As for taste, it’s similar to pineapple when eaten raw, and neutral when cooked. Plus, it’s packed with high doses of vitamins A and C, potassium and fibre.
MUSHROOMS
Known for their dense texture, the fungus family make great options for burgers, tacos and even mushroom steak. They contain selenium, a rich antioxidant that helps boost the immune system and protects the body from ageing.
SEITAN
Made from wheat gluten, seitan boasts a savoury taste and is a hearty source of protein – one 85g serving contains 15-21g of plant protein. You can make it yourself with water, flour, nutritional yeast and spices, or buy from some supermarkets. Want more meat-free inspo?
