MY BEST MATE WAS A SERIAL KILLER!

Kevin Elliott refused to believe his “mild-mannered” friend was a cold-blooded killer. The former electrician still shakes his head in disbelief to think that he actually defended his best mate after he was arrested for attacking a young woman.

Kevin, now 70, even took his two young daughters to visit “Uncle Pete” in jail in the 1970s. His late wife, Sheila, also believed Peter was innocent. “He was a good bloke – you would never have suspected,” Kevin tells Woman’s Day. “He was popular at work. He never swore or said anything nasty about anyone. He had a fiancee. We were really good mates.”

Years later, Kevin and Sheila were forced to confront the terrible reality that Peter Dupas was not only a serial rapist, but also a serial killer, whose crimes were so depraved they were almost unimaginable.

“Pick a million people and you would never have picked him as a serial killer. I had no idea,” Kevin confesses. “He made a big yellow teddy bear for my kids while he was in jail. I didn’t believe he did it.”

Dupas, now 68, was locked up for life after he was convicted of killing three young women. Police also suspect he murdered another three women during a series of depraved killing sprees.

‘HE WAS JUST PURE EVIL’

The sentencing judge at that trial described it as “one of the worst that could be imagined”.

Unbeknown to Kevin, Dupas had broken into a woman’s home and raped her after threatening to harm her baby.

“He stood out. To me the guy was just pure evil,” remembers Senior Detective Ian Armstrong, who
