The only thing bigger than their wedding was the emotional stoush that followed
When Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finally tied the knot last month, two decades after calling it quits on their first engagement, it was evident the pair had dreamed of this day for so long.
A big white dress, bigger smiles, a surprise Vegas ceremony and a European honeymoon – it had all the makings of a Hollywood fairytale but like all marriages,
they’re not easy, not even for these two. Storming past hordes of fans and photographers in Paris, the cracks slowly started to show for Ben, 49, with onlookers telling Woman’s Day he looked “somewhat exasperated” as he made his way to dinner with his new wife, Mrs Jennifer Affleck, 53.
POST-NUPTIAL BLUES
While he could be excused for being overwhelmed with the media attention and feisty fans, sources remind Woman’s Day that Ben is all too familiar with that, and unfortunately he and Jen couldn’t avoid the tension brewing between them during their getaway.
“Don’t get me wrong, Ben still feels like the luckiest guy in the world having married Jen, but last week all the excitement got on top of him and he had a bit of a breakdown,” confides an insider close to the A-list pair.
The source says Ben was “quite emotional” during the trip and struggled to remain on an even keel. “The old Ben wouldn’t have been able to open up, but all his work with therapists has allowed him to really sit with his feelings.”
Things quickly took a turn for Ben, with locals revealing he appeared teary during a night out with his wife in Paris, France, just days later. “Ben appeared to be crying over the fact that they’d had a minor fight during their honeymoon... he was just so tired from the wedding, the travelling and the househunting that it all got on top of him and he had a bit of an outburst,” explains our source.
While insiders insist the situation was over as fast as it began, their brief row is said to have “rocked” Jen. “She was shocked to see him so upset. In the end, he went home for a big rest, and she continued her summer break with her manager,” explains the source, who jokes, “No doubt Ben’s ears would have been burning!”
Interestingly, not long after their French fallout, Ben returned to LA and was spotted driving around LA with his son Samuel, 10, while Jen enjoyed some extra alone time in Italy.
“It’s early days for these two – while their paycheques say otherwise, they’re just like any other married couple... and sometimes the honeymoon just has to come to an end,” quips the source.
