Follow these expert tips to stop sniffles in their tracks

Crisp and cool mornings, cosying up on the couch, and tucking into hearty meals – there’s a lot to love about winter. One thing you might not be looking forward to is the onslaught of cold and flu season.

With many of us adjusting to life around other people after years spent in lockdown or self-isolation because of the pandemic, it’s likely your immune system will be working harder than ever to protect from germs. Pharmacist Montana Grenfell explains how to take the proactive approach when you feel the effects of a cold coming on.

KEEP YOUR FLUIDS UP

There’s nothing better than good old water to help you on your way to recovery when you’re suffering from a cold.

“Opt for hot or warm liquids, but avoid caffeine as it can cause dehydration,” explains Montana. “Water should be the first choice, but if you’re feeling run down or dehydrated, electrolyte drinks like Apohealth are always helpful. Staying hydrated helps loosen congestion, too.”

EAT SMART

Cool weather can see you turn to comfort food, especially when you’re not feeling your best. While a cheesy bowl of pasta might seem like a good idea, Montana explains you’re better off with lighter fare made with fresh ingredients.

“Eat nutritious, vitamin-rich foods like soups, broths, honey and leafy green vegies,” she says.

“Antioxidants are helpful compounds in fruit and vegetables that are immunity boosting and can aid recovery. You can find antioxidants in foods like berries, beetroot and spinach.”

VITAMIN BOOST

Your immune system is doing its best to get you on the road to wellness, so consider adding some vitamins to your daily routine to speed things up.

“Boost your vitamin and mineral intake, and consider herbal remedies like vitamin C, B, as well as echinacea, which can help bolster your immune system to fight off a cold,” says Montana.

FLU SHOT

After years spent battling a pandemic with lockdowns and social distancing, experts are predicting a significant rise in flu this season. One way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated.

“Get your flu vax to protect you from the current season’s flu strains,” advises Montana. “Always speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns and to check that the flu shot is right for you.”

PRIORITISE REST

It’s all too easy to keep soldiering on with day-to-day life when you’ve got a cold, but the best thing you can do is rest to heal and recuperate.

Struggling to get some Zzzs at night? “To help relieve stuffiness and congestion, consider over-the-counter saline nasal drops or sprays and add moisture to the air with an air vaporiser or humidifier,” says Montana. “Remember to clean this daily as per the instructions.”
