‘THIS WORK IS A PRIVILEGE’

-

Ebony Cameron swapped nursing animals for humans after realising the impact she could make.

“My mum’s had ongoing serious health issues for years and my dad battled cancer and my brother has terminal cancer,” Ebony, 36, reveals.

“Seeing their struggles, I yearned to learn more about medicine so I could help them, so I switched careers and went from being a veterinary nurse and caring for animals to caring for people 10 years ago.”

The newlywed has not looked back since, and while the emergency department can take its toll emotionally, she’s not easily phased.

“It was my first day back on the wards after my honeymoon and the TV cameras were rolling when I had to deal with a mentally unwell man experiencing an extreme psychotic episode,” says Ebony. “He had to be shackled because he was so unpredictable and a risk to himself and others. I came out of honeymoon mode and was back into medical mode pretty quick. It’s a huge privilege to do what I do and make a difference.”
