SHOW SOME SUPPORT!

Give your feet the care and attention they deserve

-

Our feet often go overlooked and unappreciated, yet they work tirelessly by carrying our weight every day. For that reason, it’s essential to give them the respect they deserve – and it all starts with wearing a supportive pair of shoes. Podiatrists Kyle Williams and Sarah Sweeney from Sarah Sweeney Podiatry explain everything you need to know!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

We may not give our feet much thought when they’re working properly, but we definitely notice when something goes wrong. “There are multiple conditions that can develop if you use improper footwear on a regular basis,” says Kyle.

This can result in short-term ailments such as corns, calluses, blisters or arch pain, or longterm conditions such as plantar fasciitis, neuromas, arthritis, tendonitis and even bunions.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Sarah says the main sign that your shoes aren’t giving you enough support is pain. “Foot, knee, hip and back pain can all be caused from unsupportive shoes,” he explains.

A common issue is plantar fasciitis, which is often The animal whisperer

The animal whisperer characterised by a stabbing pain in the heel. This occurs when a band of tissue known as the plantar fascia becomes overworked and unsupported.

“Supportive shoes (and orthotics) support the arch and the plantar fascia,” says Sarah.

Another common sign you’re not getting enough support is corns and calluses, which are caused by excess pressure.

“The right shoe will offload the excess pressure in your feet and prevent corns and calluses from occurring,” she adds.

WHAT ARE ORTHOTICS?

Your podiatrist may prescribe orthotics if you have biomechanical issues that cause pain when you walk or run.

“Orthotics are a device that you use in your shoes to provide additional support that a shoe can’t provide. These are fitted into your supportive footwear to alter your walking to further reduce your pain,” says Kyle.

“Not everyone needs orthotics, and some other support may be recommended to you such as strapping tape, arch or forefoot pads or bracing devices.”

Check with your health insurance provider to see if you’re covered for podiatry services. If you have a chronic health issue, talk to your GP to find out if you qualify for a Medicare rebate.

The wrong fit could lead to all kinds of issues!
