Despite losing his mother just days before, King Charles III swore to serve the people of the Commonweal­th in his first declaratio­n after formally being proclaimed sovereign. At the Accession Council, a formal ceremony in front more than 200 politician­s and dignitarie­s, he also promised to protect the Church of Scotland while maintainin­g he would uphold his mother’s dedication to duty. “In taking up these responsibi­lities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set,” he declared.
