The first trial ends in a mistrial after a judge is overheard by jurors calling Adnan’s attorney Cristina Gutierrez “a liar”.
FEBRUARY 2000
Adnan is convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
MARCH 2003
Adnan’s first appeal is denied.
MAY 2010
Adnan’s new legal team files another appeal, laying out a number of failures by his original attorney but three years later it is denied.
OCTOBER 2014
Serial season one is released and uncovers new evidence.
FEBRUARY 2015
Adnan gets a new hearing, which will present the new cell tower evidence.
JUNE 2016
A new trial is ordered.
MARCH 2019
Adnan is denied a new trial but soon after new DNA evidence is released seemingly clearing him.
MARCH 2022
Prosecutors agree to new DNA testing, and in September they ask a judge to overturn Adnan’s conviction.
