TRACTOR TRAIL
Gnowangerup in WA is a town with a population of just 600 and its inhabitants were worried it was being overlooked.
“Tourists going to the Stirling Range National Park would use the highway,” local, Cassy Beeck, tells Woman’s Day. “We wanted the town to stay vibrant and alive.”
This led to the development of the Horsepower Highway, a 75km trail of tricked-up tractors. “It was winning three awards that got the whole town behind the project,” says Cassy. “People realised it was a way of bringing tourists to the area and it’s worked.
“The media, word of mouth and our Facebook page means we have a huge reach. We have a new cafe in town and our supermarket is open at weekends. We’re proud of what the Horsepower Highway has achieved.”
