Mould is something that many of us have seen a lot of during the past couple of years, and with northern and eastern Australia heading into another rainy summer season, that’s unlikely to change any time soon.
Thankfully, Rachel Gilding, a design specialist from Beaumont Tiles, says there are ways that you can banish this unwelcome intruder.
“Mould thrives in damp, wet, humid conditions, and as a result of the unusual weather patterns we’ve experienced across parts of Australia, we have seen an increase in households experiencing mould outbreaks,” she explains. “But there are plenty of proactive ways to prevent mould from becoming an issue, particularly in the main danger zone – the bathroom.”
Here, Rachel reveals how to stop the troublesome spread!
IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
Rachel says it’s essential to find out what’s causing the mould in the first place.
“You can either do this yourself or call in a professional, because it can have all sorts of adverse effects on your health and the wellbeing of your space,” she says. “If it’s caused by your bathroom getting humid you will need to think about how you can increase the ventilation. If it’s a leak, work out where it is coming from and stop it.”
The one thing that you shouldn’t do is wait. “Allowing mould to spread is the worst thing you can do as it can start to wear away at grout and go into areas of the home you can’t see,” she says.
DO A DEEP CLEAN
“In the case of a mild mould outbreak, it is important to get on top of it straight away,” says Rachel.
She recommends using a spray that’s designed to remove mould and mildew, while killing spores to stop them from regrowing. “Remember to have the proper PPE mask, gloves, and goggles on as you apply these products to the mould in your bathroom,” she adds.
She also suggests installing a heater, fan and light unit. “This not only improves the bathroom comfort but provides great ventilation, which will help prevent any mould regrowth,” Rachel explains.
CALL IN PROFESSIONALS
If mould gets out of hand, it may be time to enlist the experts. “If the mould is serious, it is best to call in professionals to deal with it, particularly if it’s black mould,” Rachel advises. “I would also suggest those whose immune system is compromised, call in the professionals at the first sight of mould, as those suffering from respiratory conditions like asthma or immune conditions can be negatively affected by mould spores.”
