“The key to fighting mould is to remove that moisture and humidity ASAP,” says Rachel. “There are a few nifty ways to help reduce the likelihood of mould occurring or to stop it from spreading.”

• Opt for epoxy grout. It’s a waterproof polymer that will repel water, mould and mildew, unlike cement-based grout.

• If you have cement-based grout, after a deep clean, seal it!

• Consider underfloor heating. This can help water evaporate quickly, so you don’t have damp spots where mould could likely grow. Keep those grout lines free of moisture to guarantee that mould won’t be able to spread.

• Use a heated towel railing to prevent towels from creating the right environment for mould or mildew to take hold. If an area is kept dry, it won’t be able to grow mould.

• Instal an exhaust fan or leave a window open. Airflow prevents condensation, which is one of the elements that helps mould thrive.

• Clean mould hot spots regularly. This should be done every six to 12 months if you live in a place with high humidity or have an older grout to help prevent mould.
