Celebrating 10 years of Have You Been Paying Attention?, host Tom Gleisner reveals his favourite moments so far
Tom Gleisner admits he “certainly” didn’t expect during the first season of Have You Been Paying Attention? that the beloved panel quiz show would become such a big hit.
“We had very few viewers and no one even knew the show was on. But we always believed that once people stumbled across the show, they would stick with it. Which is what happened,” Tom tells Woman’s Day.
Tom, 60, adds that “a huge part” of why he’s still such a fan of the show all these years later is because “it’s never predictable”.
“I genuinely have no idea what anyone is going to say in response to a question,” Tom says, who co-writes the questions with “a small but dedicated team of news watchers”.
In fact, Tom is so committed that he confesses he doesn’t switch off from the news cycle, even on holiday!
“I actually enjoy the news,” says the comedian, who names monkeypox and the end of the Neighbours as his favourite stories of 2022.
“Both provided ample content for our show,” he adds.
As for HYBPA?’S top guest of the year, that honour goes to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was guest quizmaster on the special 250th show. “He showed a great sense of humour,” he says.
Albo isn’t the only “dream” visitor they’ve had on the show, with Tom revealing he’s often in awe at how clever his fellow comedians and co-stars are, but wouldn’t mind if comedy legends Tina Fey or Conan O’brien stopped by their set one day. “Do you happen to know their agents?” he cheekily asks.
