CARNARVON GORGE QLD
This deep incision, 400km (248.5 miles) inland from Bundaberg, is a work of art from both nature and ancient Indigenous painters. A track threads through the gorge to Big Bend, with several short trails detouring away into side gorges. Prime among them is the simply titled Art Gallery, where a 60m-long (197ft) line of cliffs is covered in more than 2000 Aboriginal paintings and ochre stencils – hands, animal tracks, boomerangs. The track is less maintained beyond the Art Gallery, but it’s worth continuing to view Cathedral Cave, the second of
Carnarvon’s art sites. At this large overhang, the art includes a depiction of a rifle from early European contact. It’s a short distance from here to the pool at Big Bend, where the walk turns back through the spectacular sandstone gorge.
