BARRK SANDSTONE WALK NT
Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) is an outlier of the Arnhem Land escarpment adrift among the floodplains of Kakadu National Park. Two major rock-art galleries feature along its base, and they can be connected on one of the longest of the national park’s day walks. The hike begins along the paved trail to the main Anbangbang Gallery, where paintings include creation beings such as Namarrkon (Lightning Man). The walk climbs and crosses Burrungkuy, at times through a virtual lost city of sandstone, before descending to Nanguluwur, a less-visited gallery where the paintings include “contact art” of European sailing ships. From here, the track skirts Burrungkuy, crossing a rocky ridge and returning to the car park. Days can be brutally hot, even in winter, so carry plenty of water.
