ANZAC Appeal 2018 – When our heroes need heroes

Yarrawonga Chronicle - - Front Page -

Victorians are urged to buy and wear an ANZAC badge this ANZAC Day and acknowledge that even heroes need heroes.

Organisers are calling on all Victorians to dig deep and help support Australian veterans, both young and old.

The 2018 ANZAC Appeal will commence in late March in the lead up to ANZAC Day on April 25 with veterans and volunteers selling ANZAC badges throughout the community.

According to RSL State President Dr Robert Webster, almost one million ANZAC Appeal badges will be distributed throughout Victoria alone this year.

“These badges are distributed to our network of 285 Sub-Branches in every corner of the state; they then assemble their teams of local volunteers, often veterans, who spend hours selling in the streets of the community,” said Mr Webster.

“The money we raise from the sale of ANZAC Appeal badges helps current and former defence force personnel and their families when in need.

Mr Webster said that help provided varies dramatically but includes direct assistance such as paying rent, medical bills, and other living expenses; providing food vouchers and home maintenance assistance; and education or re-education. Other assistance includes pension and advocacy support for veterans.

“Veterans, both young and old, are a proud bunch by nature and asking for help is always difficult and the last thing they do; by the time we are called in to assist, the situation is often desperate.”

“The ANZAC Appeal, the work of the RSL Victoria and its Sub-Branches, also brings together a nation for a time to reflect what has happened in past conflicts and also an opportunity to recognise what is happening now.”

“Through the ANZAC Appeal, Australians continue to stand together, wearing their own badge of honour and remembering the servicemen and women who sacrificed so much for us.” Dr Webster concluded.

“The community’s support for the ANZAC Appeal is vital for us to continue to deliver assistance to those who’ve given so much protecting our way of life.”

This ANZAC Appeal will see the launch of a special $30 badge commemorating the Battle of Villers Bretonneux, and a new $50 badge to commemorate the ‘Our ANZAC Nurses.’

ANZAC Appeal badges can be purchased from your local RSL Sub-Branch, Officeworks and Woolworths and from volunteer collectors in your local community during April. Alternately, you can go online and donate at www.anzacappeal.com.au
