Safety review called for bus stop
Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called for an immediate safety review to be carried out at a Bundalong school bus stop.
Speaking in State Parliament last week, Ms Lovell called on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan to order the review of the bus stop on the Murray Valley Highway outside the Bundalong General Store, used by both V/Line passengers and children who attend school in Wangaratta.
Ms Lovell has identified key measures that will improve safety for children using the service.
She was recently contacted by a constituent concerned about the safety of the children using this bus stop, which is located in an 80km/h speed zone.
“The school bus stop outside the Bundalong General Store on the Murray Valley Highway lacks any signage to warn motorists that the stop is used by school children and this is par- ticularly dangerous “with vehicles travelling past at 80km/h,” Ms Lovell said.
There is also no designated parking so each morning the children have to avoid parent vehicles as well as customers driving into the driveway of the store.”
Ms Lovell said the situation in the afternoon was much worse, with the buses dropping off the children on the western side of the highway, meaning they have to cross the road to get to waiting parents.
“The afternoon drop off is on a gravel area off the road opposite the store and students are forced to cross the busy highway to get to their parents,” Ms Lovell said.
“This area again has no signage and is used by other traffic as a parking bay, creating a dangerous situation for the school children,”
Ms Lovell said, “Parents have advised me this bus stop is currently unsafe for children catching school buses and that is why I have asked the minister to order an immediate safety review by VicRoads to identify measures that will improve safety at this location.”
