In a clash of traditional rivals, Yarrawonga Mulwala has defeated the ever strong Rovers Bruck by 10 runs.
Playing for the first time in the season at Stan Hargreaves Oval in Yarrawonga; the turf was a blessing for both teams.
Winning the toss, Captain Sharp sent Rovers Bruck into bat.
Veteran opening partners Ashton and Elliott were tested by breakaway quick Nick Irvine who had them ducking and diving.
With the score on 42, Irvine removed the dangerous Elliott for just 4 and then Jason Sharp into the attack had Ashton plump LBW for 36 and the score at 2 for 46.
Irvine struck again sending Anderson back to the pavilion for 8.
The Lakers were able to bowl tight lines for long periods but anything loose was hit to the boundary with 16 fours in a total of 6 for 119. Sharp had 2 for 8 off 8 overs; Irvine 2 for 22 off 8; Ned Mullins 1 for 24 off 8 in his return to cricket.
The chase for victory began with Rod Willett and Dave True and they negotiated six overs before True was dismissed for 6 runs.
Tom Irvine came to the crease and tried to lift the run rate against quality bowling.
Willett got to 10 before he was dismissed with the score on 22.
Ned Mullins hit 7 runs before falling with the score on 3 for 36 and the team needing a partnership.
Tom Irvine made 13 runs before falling and the Lakers were teetering at 4 for 45.
Nick Irvine was joined by Justin Lidger- wood and they knocked the ball into the gaps; while Irvine also displayed power with 10 boundaries including two massive sixes over the picket fence.
Lidgerwood made 15 in a partnership of 40; when he fell with the score at 5 for 85.
Irvine again took control in a partnership with Tom Elliott.
Although Elliott was dismissed without scoring; he was involved in a match winning partnership with Irvine of 23 runs from four overs.
With Elliott’s dismissal, the Lakers need two runs for victory; Irvine saw the team pass the Rovers Bruck total but fell with the score on 123 and Irvine with the matching winning innings of 65 runs.
The Lakers batted through to be all out for 129 and secured a 10-run victory.
