Victorian Junior Snooker Championships
The Reventon Victorian Junior Snooker championships were held in Yarraville last weekend and two local entrants played really well considering it was their first tournament.
This was the first time to wear full dress and first time to have a referee watching their every move.
In the under 15’s the local entrant was 14-year-old Damien Thorpe from Rutherglen.
Damien’s parents Jase and Kellie Thorpe were there to see Damien play, proud grandparents John and Eileen Thorpe and Cheryl and Les Wheeler had to wait for results at home.
Damien attends Cathedral College, Wangaratta and has only been learning to play snooker for a short time whereas he has been playing pool since he was 10.
Eight-year-old Mia Macheda attends school at Yarrawonga P-12 College and has only been playing for a couple of weeks but her determination made up for her lack of skills on the table.
Mia is the third generation of women Snooker players in her family and from Yarrawonga.
Her mother Samantha Macheda (Ridley) and grandmother Shirley Ridley preceding her.
Proud grandparents Cherie and Joe Macheda are from Cobram.
Neither brought home a Victorian title but neither of them expected to.
It was all about snooker and to experience the competitive side.
Playing in this tournament will be of great benefit for both of them and they will also be eligible to play in the Junior Australian Snooker Championships in January next year.
The championships will be held at the Commercial Club in Albury and the two will be putting in a lot of practice before then where they will meet up with and compete against the top players from all over Australia.
