Friends of Yarrawonga Library hosted another of their Book Chat afternoons in the library on Saturday, November 17.

The topic was ‘the experience of migration’ and interesting and fascinating stories were told by locals Kath Gerdsen, originally from Guernsey, and Andrew Spilva, who came from Latvia via Germany.

The discussion led to stories from many of those present, whose experiences showed a surprising number of locals having come from other countries and lived in camps, such as Bonegilla, or temporary accommodation in various places around Victoria and New South Wales.

Libraries and reading books played a big part in learning to speak English and assimilation.
