Down­pour de­liv­ers 80mm

Yar­ra­wonga and sur­rounds re­ceived a month’s worth of rain­fall in just sev­eral hours last Wednes­day morn­ing, De­cem­ber 12 re­sult­ing in flash flood­ing and mi­nor street clo­sures.

Over 70mm of rain fell from early Thurs­day morn­ing into Fri­day with a fur­ther 9.2mm re­ported to have fell over the week­end ac­cord­ing to the El­ders weather web­site.

Wa­ter cov­ered res­i­den­tial roads in sev­eral ar­eas of Yar­ra­wonga and Mul­wala re­sult­ing in short term clo­sures but were later re­opened.

The Mur­ray Val­ley High­way was also built up with the Hume Free­way closed in both direc­tions due to heavy rain­fall and traf­fic trav­el­ling be­tween Mel­bourne and Syd­ney di­verted through Yar­ra­wonga.

The Hume Free­way was closed south­bound at Bar­nawartha and north­bound at Sey­mour with traf­fic be­ing di­verted along the Mur­ray Val­ley High­way and Goul­burn Val­ley High­way through Shep­par­ton.

River lev­els are ex­pected to rise over the com­ing days on the Ovens and Mur­ray Rivers. Camp­ing re­stric­tions may ap­ply and campers are ad­vised to check park clo­sures and con­di­tions.

Hume Free­way traf­fic was di­verted down the Mur­ray Val­ley High­way on Thurs­day with traf­fic banked up along Telford Street with a large num­ber of trucks trav­el­ling through.
