Downpour delivers 80mm
Yarrawonga and surrounds received a month’s worth of rainfall in just several hours last Wednesday morning, December 12 resulting in flash flooding and minor street closures.
Over 70mm of rain fell from early Thursday morning into Friday with a further 9.2mm reported to have fell over the weekend according to the Elders weather website.
Water covered residential roads in several areas of Yarrawonga and Mulwala resulting in short term closures but were later reopened.
The Murray Valley Highway was also built up with the Hume Freeway closed in both directions due to heavy rainfall and traffic travelling between Melbourne and Sydney diverted through Yarrawonga.
The Hume Freeway was closed southbound at Barnawartha and northbound at Seymour with traffic being diverted along the Murray Valley Highway and Goulburn Valley Highway through Shepparton.
River levels are expected to rise over the coming days on the Ovens and Murray Rivers. Camping restrictions may apply and campers are advised to check park closures and conditions.
Hume Freeway traffic was diverted down the Murray Valley Highway on Thursday with traffic banked up along Telford Street with a large number of trucks travelling through.
