$130,000 ace by tennis club
“It’s a fantastic partnership,” Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum told key people involved in the three-way partnership at the club last Wednesday.
“It’s a great announcement. Well done to Mark (Mark Henderson CEO Moira) for the $20,000 to take responsibility for the carpark. Congratulations to Jo and Daryl (tennis club’s secretary and president respectively) for getting the application in.”
The club is committing up to $30,000 and a Federal Government contribution of $77,241 was greatly appreciated by Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club and Moira Shire Council.
Club president Daryl Bennett expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government and Moira Shire Council, and to club secretary Jo, and committeeman Noel Thomas for their roles in the grant application.
“Thank you very much for your assistance in giving a grant to this project,” Moira Shire Councillor Peter Lawless told Mr Drum. “It just shows what can be done when people have a go.”
The tennis club’s new-look carpark entrance off the recently constructed road alongside the swimming pool - which follows increased safety measures in respect of Yarrawonga Holiday Park - will be the entrance used by most tennis players and members. Fencing will be involved.
Club improvements will include replacement of the existing shed beside the hard courts. “The shed will be replaced with a bigger shed and extra bays under cover for spectators from the sun. The shed will also include storage and work shed for ground staff,” club secretary Jo McCarthy told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
“There will be a pathway with lighting from the carpark through the separated lawn courts to the clubhouse. The open grandstand will be relocated, maybe to become sections.”
Mr Drum commented that the project is “a very good practical job and country people are good at doing this work”. “The lawn courts are always magnificent,” he said.
Tennis Victoria and Tennis Australia officials rate the courts in the highest terms, having described the courts “as good as Kooyong” to the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
Ideally, Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club would like to have the shed, fence and carpark completed by Easter, in time for its big Easter Tournament.
An upgraded entrance to the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club and facility improvements totalling an overall approximate $130,000 are to occur, courtesy of teamwork by the club, Moira Shire Council and the Federal Government.
