Jack in national tennis
Selection excludes metropolitan players and allows the country players the opportunity to take on their other rural counterparts. Each state’s team comprises two boys and two girls.
The tennis will be extremely intense as Victoria will play each other state and territory over the four day period with a rubber involving singles, doubles and a mixed doubles for each player.
It is another incredible opportunity for Jack. Selection was based on the John Fitzgerald Cup which consisted of the nine country regions playing in Mildura in October. From the 36 boys who played, Jack was undefeated in singles playing as number one in the Goulburn Region team. At that event Goulburn finished second to the ever powerful Barwon team.
The 13-year-old Year 7 Yarrawonga College P-1 student was very excited to find out that his good friend from Gippsland Sam McGregor was also selected.
This will be the third time that Jack has represented Victoria at tennis. In October 2017 he was a member of the 12/U Bruce Cup Victoria Team that comprised seven boys and seven from each state. At that competition Victoria finished fourth.
In December 2017 Jack also represented Victoria in the 12/U Australian Teams Championships at Melbourne Park where he was a member of a team of four boys that finished third out of all the states. The highlight of this event was playing against other nearby countries like Singapore and Japan.
Jack is currently ranked sixth in Victoria for his age which is an outstanding feat considering the challenge of residing in a rural area. The five players above him are from Melbourne and he has previously beaten two of them. Jack is known as a fighter on the court who will chase down every shot often forcing his opponent to make mistakes.
Jack’s progress would not have been possible without long term coach Jon Coleman who has coached Jack since he was seven. Jon has been a tremendous role model for Jack and has always provided wonderful support and encouragement. Yarrawonga’s coach Greg Duns and his coaching panel have also been a wonderful support providing squad training during the summer months.
Jack will do his best in the Foundation Cup and appreciates the local community’s support.
Talented Yarrawonga tennis player Jack Bassett has been selected to represent Victoria in the 13/U Red Energy Australian Made Foundation Cup at Kooyong from January 14 until January 17.
