Donation assists girls footy

-

Despite the excitement and anticipation for the start of 2021 season there were low numbers at training and the girls faced the prospect of not being able to play at all.

Then along came a great idea to combine several club teams in the league (Yarrawonga, Alpine Lions based in Whorouly and Thurgoona) who were also facing the same proposition. The alternative of having willing girls not playing was not an option.

“It was a master stroke to bring the girls together but with this presented the challenge of everyone needing to get to combined training sessions and games,” Open Women’s team coach Jim Gillies said.

“Some girls have had to travel over two hours to training and games each week.”

Jim then came across the Toyota Good For Footy Suggestion Box initiative and asked for some assistance with fuel costs for the girls who face more than the usual travel challenges to train and play football.

The Toyota initiative is a chance for fans to submit their suggestions on how to make the game more accessible for all and support football at all levels, from grassroots through to the elite.

Thanks to Jim and Toyota United received a $1,500 AmpolCash Gift Card from Toyota Australia which they will distribute to players, parents and officials through vouchers at their upcoming presentation night.

Yarrawonga Toyota Dealer Principal Steven Zandt said it was great be able to assist the girls in their quest to play football.

“In what has been a challenging time for community sport everywhere every little bit helps.

“We love supporting local sport where we can, and this is another good example of how we can offer support.”
