Local leagues finished for 2021

-

Meanwhile, the Ovens and Murray, and the Hume leagues remain keen to see finals played.

If Victoria’s lockdown ends this Thursday at 11.59pm, the O and M, and Hume leagues will commence finals this weekend, in line with clubs’ and leagues’ wishes. Two finals would be played this Saturday and Sunday.

Clubs have not been able to train since the lockdown was implemented at short notice last Saturday week.

The O and M wants the season concluded by October 3 at the latest. Saturday, October 2 is the latest date the Hume league is prepared to accept.

If the lockdown continues after this Thursday, a condensed finals series will be seriously considered as an option.

After a meeting of Picola League clubs last Wednesday which was followed by a meeting of the PDFNL Board, the league decided that the remainder of the 2021 season would be cancelled due to the uncertain timeframes of the NSW and Victorian state-wide lockdowns.

A press statement released by the league read: “With a number of members currently within isolation, any meaningful return to fitness and play would at best not occur until the end of September.

“After an extremely difficult season where every reasonable effort has been exhausted, the decision has been made to provide closure.

“The PDFNL thanks all of its members, stakeholders and partners and will look forward to the 2022 season.

“The PDFNL intends to hold its best and fairest awards at a later date which is yet to be confirmed.”

The Murray Football Netball League met last Thursday, confirming the season would end without a premiership decided.

“The Murray FNL’s number one priority has always been the safety and wellbeing of our communities,” the league statement read.

“Our clubs rely on these communities for supporters, players, umpires, officials and volunteers.

“The Murray FNL Executive has made the decision not to award Premiership trophies and medals for season 2021. However, Minor Premiers, Best and Fairest and other individual awards will be recognised at a date to be determined.”

The league also thanked sponsors, committees, players, volunteers and supporters for their patience, and said every option had been explored to get back onto the field and courts.

The Murray Football Netball League and Picola District Football Netball League joined the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League in officially cancelling their 2021 season last week.
