Junior cricket welcomes new and returning players
Lakers cricketing training is in full swing down at Vic Park and it’s been fabulous seeing new and returning players honing their cricket skills in preparation for another huge season of smashing sixes, taking catches, and bowling wickets.
Training times are 4pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays. New players welcome.
With another season of junior cricket fast approaching, the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club is now calling for registrations for all Junior programs.
Catering for all children from five years of age to 16, the YMCC offers extensive and exciting development programs which provide all juniors the opportunity to learn and develop the basic skills of cricket in a nurturing team environment.
The littlest Lakers will continue to participate in the Woolworths Junior Blasters (5-7) and Master Blasters (8-10) programs on Friday nights, starting at 5pm.
Saturday mornings will continue to see developing youngsters take on the best that the Wangaratta and District competition has to offer. Last year the club had two Under 12 sides, one Under 14 side and two Under 16 sides.
A commencement date for Woolworths Junior/Master Blasters will be confirmed through Facebook.
The program is action packed, and the girls and boys will enjoy learning fundamental cricket skills.
Each of the eight one-hour sessions is broken into drills and modified games with the focus on fun and active participation.
Parental involvement is essential, with 1015 people required to assist each week to ensure the children learn as much as possible.
All kids get their own Junior Blasters pack and wear the colours of their favourite Big Bash heroes.
All equipment is provided, and kids will use plastic bats and rubber balls to allow for safe participation.
Also, on a weekly basis there will be the ever-popular icy poles.
The Master Blaster competition allows for kids to continue building on their skills as they look to transition into Saturday morning competitions.
This program is aimed at 8-10 year old girls and boys and will be action packed with an extremely fast paced format.
Teams will be made up of eight players and the opposing teams will bat simultaneously on neighbouring small ovals, so all players are participating at all times.
A rubber ball will be used, so protective equipment is not required, further speeding up the game.
Each pair will bat for four overs, for a total of 16 overs per match ensuring games are completed within one hour.
Each team will have an experienced coach and wear their favourite Big Bash team’s colours.
Saturday morning cricket provides junior players the opportunity to further develop their skills on their way to senior cricket under the watchful eye of experienced and knowledgeable coaching staff.
A starting date for Saturday WDCA cricket is yet to be confirmed. YMCC looking to field two U12/U14/U16 sides. Numbers continue to grow down at Lakers HQ and there is no doubt that the professional programs on offer play a big part in that.
While none of the junior sides tasted any premiership success last season, they none the less made personal improvements with their skills.
The Under 16 Bulls side made the semifinals and were beaten by the eventual premiers. The club are very confident that all of last year’s players are keen to continue to build on their skills and look forward to seeing new players join them in their endeavours.
Once again, the YMCC will be conducting all registrations online via Cricket Victoria’s “Play Cricket” website.
Simply log on to http://yarrawongamulwalacc.vic.cricket.com.au/ and follow the prompts for either the Junior Blaster or Master Blaster. The registration fee this season is $99 per child for Junior and Master Blaster, which is set by Cricket Australia.
Saturday morning cricket also will need to register through the same website, http://yarrawongamulwalacc.vic.cricket.com.au/.
Please ensure that you have registered by the end of September, as this will allow time for team allocations, etc.

The Lakers are very keen to continue to develop their Women’s cricket numbers. Last year the club ran a very successful Girl’s Introduction to Cricket program down at Vic Park. Numbers were very impressive and all the participants thoroughly enjoyed it.
These sessions were aimed at developing girls’ fundamental cricket skills and the club are looking at taking it a step further this year by playing some modified games in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
