Mayor and deputy continue

- BY ROBERT MUIR

Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke and deputy mayor Shaun Whitechurch will continue in their roles until at least December 4 – the Covid-19 related changed date of council’s election.

The mayor was re-elected unopposed at yesterday’s monthly meeting of council.

Councillor Whitechurch defeated Councillor Gail Law for the deputy mayor’s position via a secret ballot.

NSW council elections were to be held this month, on September 4 but due to the coronavirus pandemic were postponed to December 4.

Mayoral elections were to be held in September for mayors elected in September 2018 when their two-year terms expired.

Mayor Bourke and deputy mayor Whitechurch will therefore serve in their roles until December 4. “There is an unavoidable period between the 4th December and until council first plans to meet on 23rd December where council will not have a mayor or deputy mayor,” council’s General Manager Adrian Butler said.

Council also decided last week should there be any engagements normally involving the mayor or deputy in the mayor’s absence, the general manager or their delegate would be considered to undertake those engagements.
