Community group award

- BY ROBERT MUIR

It will replace the Community Event of the Year and the Community Project of the Year Award categories.

“Over the last twelve months COVID-19 public health orders have meant that many events and projects across the council area have been cancelled or postponed,” Federation Council’s director corporate and community services Jo Shannon said.

“This means that we are unlikely to get many, if any, events nominated.”

Ms Shannon said many community groups and organisations have been innovative in the way they have maintained their memberships or delivered their programs.

“They have found ways to connect to the community, amend their delivery programs to suit Public Health Orders, with some introducing products to the community that were well suited to the restrictions placed on them by COVID,” she said.

“Even with these new approaches having been taken, a number of events and projects have simply been cancelled or postponed indefinitely.

“With this in mind it is felt that it may be more prudent to replace the event of the year and project of the year categories with a new category, the Federation Community Group of the Year, to celebrate those groups who have been able to continue activities irrespective of the obstacles.”

Council unanimously agreed with Ms Shannon’s recommendation, on the motion of Crs Gail Law and Andrew Kennedy.

The resolution also includes scaling down of the Australia Day 2022 event – to be held in Corowa at Bangerang Park - through the use of a single community group to provide catering and activities.

Council runs an expressions of interest process through Federation Snippets for interested community groups for the Wednesday, January 26 event. Nominations for the various awards are now open, until November 29.

A new category, the Federation Community Group of the Year, is to be awarded for the first time on Australia Day 2022.
