Jean celebrates 100 years

-

Jean Shanahan nee Loughnan was the fourth of nine children of Joseph and Lena Loughnan of Mulwala.

All of the Loughnan children were born in Mulwala where Midwife Stevenson played a prominent part in the delivery of so many babies in Mulwala.

Jean married Leo Shanahan an accountant at the Mulwala Explosives Factory where Jean also worked. The pair were married at St Brigid’s Catholic Church by Rev. Father Hanrahan.

Leo and Jean lived in Mulwala for a few years then moved to Yarrawonga. The Shanahan’s

final move was to Bendigo where Leo accepted a promotion at the Ordinance Facility at Bendigo.

Leo and Jean raised a family of seven children.

Jena’s 100th birthday was celebrated at a luncheon at a hotel in Bendigo which was restricted to 10 guests due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Asked about her longevity Jean said she had achieved her 100th milestone through having a very caring husband, a supporting family and a diet of hearty food with plenty of vegetables and fruit.

“I had such a wonderful day. I received many phone calls, cards and so many beautiful flowers, and the letter from the Queen was special,” Jean said.

Former local Patricia Jean Shanahan of Bendigo celebrated her 100th Birthday last Wednesday, October 6.
