Duke of Edinburgh Shield

The gathering of RSL bowlers were addressed by President Gary Guidotti, Last Post was played, a minute's silence to remember the fallen was held followed by Reveille and the beautiful Australian flag was raised to the mast head.

On the weekend of April 15 and 16 approximately 1400 RSL Bowlers across 15 venues competed for the Duke of Edinburgh Shield.

ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Club, Yarrawonga Bowls Club and the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort Bowls Club were lucky enough to be selected as venues for this prestigious event.

This report is from the event held at ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Club.

The games were played in beautiful sunshine on the Saturday with teams competing against each other and completing three games of twelve ends.

The games were played with a will to win with several new bowlers playing their first major tournament.

The competitors are to be congratulated on the manner in which the games were played in a sportsman like atmosphere. At the end of the first days play the two leading contenders Altona and Traralgon were in a tight tussle for early bragging rights.

Day 2 on Sunday and at start time the rain was well and truly in control of proceedings. Game start time had to be put back to 10.40am and the number of ends reduced to 8 to ensure that the games were completed.

We were lucky to get on the greens at all however due to the good work of Greenskeeper Gary Parker they dried out sufficiently to allow play to continue.

Results were as follows:

Altona 10 points and plus 110 shots. Traralgon 8 points and plus 20 shots. Frankston 6 points and plus 28 shots. Mulwala 2 points and minus 40 shots. Kyneton 2 points and minus 42 shots.

Sale 2 points and minus 49 shots.

Overall a great weekend was enjoyed by ninety-six bowlers on the greens and once again congratulations go to the winners Altona.

Win, lose or draw – really, there were no losers as we were out on the greens enjoying each other's company, catching up with old friends and making new ones.

CMOB thank Yarrawonga Mulwala RSL Sub Branch and in particular President Gary Guidotti and Secretary David King for their efforts in the organising and participation of the event. Representative Mark Smith did an enormous job in getting the event up and running and remained in control throughout.

Barry Pitt once again volunteered as umpire, Greg Bennett volunteered to run the bar on Saturday, and the many volunteers from the ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowling Club made the weekend special and a successful tournament and we owe them a vote of thanks.

Of course the ClubMulwala staff were once again magnificent in their assistance and accommodating especially when the rain changed the plans on several occasions and CMOB offer a heartfelt thank you for being so flexible. Well done all.
