The planet’s oceans are now home to five huge garbage patches, the largest one be­ing the Great Pa­cific Garbage Patch (GPGP), lo­cated be­tween Hawaii and Cal­i­for­nia. The GPGP cov­ers an es­ti­mated sur­face area of 1.6 mil­lion square kilo­me­tres, which is three times the size of France. The ac­cu­mu­lated GPGP plas­tic weighs 80,000 tons, the equiv­a­lent of 500 jumbo jets. Ocean plas­tics make up 74 per cent of the diet of sea tur­tles in and around the GPGP.
