Relocating for a new job

Getting the job

Henry: Hello, Grace. This is Henry Thomas from Arco International here. I’m just calling to tell you the result of our interviews.

Grace: Oh, hello, Henry. Thanks for calling.

Henry: And it’s good news. We’d like to offer you the job as head of finance.

Grace: Oh, that is good news! I really feel that the job is perfect for me.

Henry: But it does mean moving to Cambridge, of course. That won’t be a problem, I hope. Grace: No, it won’t be. My partner is a freelance journalist and works from home. It doesn’t really matter where he is based.

Henry: As we said in the interview, the company can help with relocation expenses and we can give you some practical support, too. Grace: That sounds perfect.

Henry: Why don’t you come in to go over the contract with us? I’ll arrange for you to see Ellen Jones in HR. She can go through the details with you.

At HR

Grace: Good morning! I’m really excited about starting here in two months’ time. Henry said that the company can give me some support in that process.

Ellen: Yes, we certainly can. Our relocation package for people at your level includes help with finding a home. We have good contacts with local estate agents and will pay for some home-finding trips. Grace: Excellent. And during the interview, I was told that you will provide temporary accommodation if we haven’t been able to find a place before I start work here. Ellen: That’s right. We will also pay for removal costs when you actually do move.

Grace: We’re renting at the moment but are thinking of buying a house here.

Ellen: Your package includes estate agent fees and other expenses you normally have when buying or selling a house.

Grace’s partner

Gordon: I’ve been looking at some property websites in the area, and there are some nice small houses in our price range.

Grace: Have you looked into mortgages?

Gordon: Yes. There are several possibilities. We need to go through them in detail.

Grace: But not just this minute. First, I want to sit down with a glass of wine.

Gordon: Absolutely! Relax. And imagine we’re on the balcony of a nice new house in a quiet area near the centre of Cambridge.

Packing

Grace: It’s amazing how much we’ve collected over the three years we’ve been here. Gordon: I agree. But now, we have the chance to sort it out and throw out anything we don’t need.

Grace: Have we got enough strong packing cartons?

Gordon: I think so. The removal company gave us various sizes together with heavy-duty packaging tape and labelling stickers. Grace: I bought some rolls of bubble wrap and I’ve been saving newspapers as packaging material. We mustn’t forget to label the boxes. It will make unpacking so much easier.

Gordon: True. But that’s enough about the preparation. Let’s make a start. I’ll do the kitchen if you do the bedroom.

Grace: Great. But first, I’ll pack a suitcase for the first couple of days and put it in the car.
